FRANK G. BANKER  --  Frank G. Banker, 14 died Monday, October 4th at Lebanon Springs, N.Y. He was killed instantly when struck by a car while riding his bicycle near his home.

    Born in Syracuse Mav 26, 1955, he was a resident of Phoenix, Gilberts Mills Rd... for ten years prior to moving with his family to Lebanon Springs four years ago. He attended Phoenix Schools. He was a 10th grade student in New Lebanon Central High School and a member of the Swim team; communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church of New Lebanon, N.Y.

    He is survived by his parents Charles W. and Margaret Scheidt Banker; three brothers, Charles of Taiwan; David William and Sherman all of Lebanon Springs, one sister Mrs. Kathryn Shipman of Syracuse; paternal grandfather Frank Banker of Melrose, N.Y. Maternal grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Scheidt of Rochester.  Funeral services were held in the Hall and Higgins Funeral Home, Stephentown, N.Y. Friday October 8th, 1971 at 9:30 a.m. and at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church where a Requiem High Mass was offered at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Tooher the celebrant.

    Interment was in Cemetery of the Evergreen, New Lebanon N.Y.

Brown, Charles J.  --  [Published November 3, 1995 in the Times Union, Albany, NY]
WEST SAND LAKE Charles J. Brown, 76, of Route 150 died Thursday at his residence. He was born in the town of Lebanon.
    Mr. Brown had resided since 1965 in West Sand Lake, and was educated at New Lebanon Central Schools.  He was a laborer for U.W. Marx General Contractors in Troy for 19 years before retiring in 1979.  Mr. Brown was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in the South Pacific.  He was a member of the First Bible Baptist Church and the American Legion.
    The widower of Dorothy R. Chittenden Brown, Mr. Brown's survivors include two sons, Richard C. Brown of Stephentown and David C. Brown of West Sand Lake; a sister, Florence Hall Vellotti of Brunswick; and five grandchildren.
    A service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday in the First Bible Baptist Church, Route 150.  Contributions may be made to the First Bible Baptist Church, Route 150, Box 503, West Sand Lake, NY 12196.  Arrangements by the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home.

Richard Donnelly, 74, World War II veteran

    NEW LEBANON, N.Y. -- Richard L. Donnelly, 74, of Route 22, Lebanon Springs, died Sunday evening at Springside of Pittsfield, Mass.  Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 18, 1927, son of Frank and Blanche Bournal Donnelly, he was a lifelong resident of New Lebanon and attended New Lebanon Central School.
    A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the battleship USS Iowa and in Operation Crossroads, the first nuclear weapons test in 1946 at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1947.

    He and his wife, the former Alfreda R. Reynolds, owned and operated Springs Liquor and Wine. They formerly owned Springs Market for many years. In his younger years, he had been employed by GE in Pittsfield and the Columbia County Highway Department. Mr. Donnelly was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. He was a member of the Canaan Veterans of Foreign Wars and enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening and his birdhouses. 
    Besides his wife, whom he married in March 1943, he leaves two sons, Richard L. Donnelly Jr. and John F. Donnelly, both of Lebanon Springs; a daughter, Teresa M. Keith of Austerlitz, N.Y.; a sister, Marie Fredette of Albany, and a brother, Peter Donnelly of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. A daughter, Patricia A. Donnelly, is deceased.
    FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Richard L. Donnelly will be Thursday at 6 p.m. from HALL & HIGGINS FUNERAL HOME, 457 NY 43, Stephentown, N.Y., with the Rev. Lee Smith, chaplain of Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield, officiating. Cremation will follow at Gardner Earl Crematorium in Troy, N.Y. Calling hours will be Thursday from 3 to 6. Contributions may be made to the LVPA Ambulance Fund in care of the funeral home. He was predeceased by two brothers, Alfred and James Donnelly.

 

 

Drowne, Richard D.  --  [Published May 7, 1999 in the Times Union, Albany, NY]

ALBANY -- Richard D. Drowne, 58, of Edgewood Acres, died Wednesday at Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany after a lengthy illness.

    Mr. Drowne born November 14, 1940 in Chatham is the son of the late Donald R. Drowne, 1990 and Dorothy (Stever) Drowne of Old Chatham. He attended New Lebanon High School.

    Mr. Drowne was employed with Kinderhill Farm for many years as a security guard and was employed with O'Dell Fuel of Old Chatham for 15 years as a serviceman and delivery of fuel before he was stricken with a heart attack and could no longer work. He was a long time resident of Old Chatham before moving to Chatham.

    He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Malden Bridge, NY. Besides his mother Dorothy of Old Chatham, he is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Miller) Drowne of Old Chatham; two sons, Richard R. Drowne of Ghent, NY, David F. Drowne of Chatham; sister, Cheryl Lewis of Old Chatham; dear friend, Barbara Lauster of Chatham. Also survived by five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral service will be Monday 12:00 p.m. from the Wenk Funeral Home, Chatham with the Reverend Robert Zittell officiating. Calling hour will be Monday 11:00-12:00. Hall, Raymond J. Jr.  --  [Published Sunday February 13, 2000 in the Times Union, Albany, NY]

NASSAU -- Raymond J. Hall Jr., 16, of Rt. 20 Brainard died on Saturday at Albany Medical Center from injuries sustained on Friday in an automobile accident on Rt. 20.

    Born in Albany he was son of Raymond J. Hall Sr. of Brainard and Debby Jones VanVorst of Averill Park. A lifelong resident of the area he was a student in the junior class at the New Lebanon High School. Raymond had also attended school in the Averill Park School District and St. Judes School in Wynantskill.

    Raymond was enrolled in the Automotive Mechanics Course at Vo-Tec. He enjoyed doing mechanical work on autos and also enjoyed snowmobiling and 4-wheeling. He was a communicant of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park.

    Survivors in addition to his parents include three brothers, Leonard B. VanVorst III, Brandon L. VanVorst and Eric D. VanVorst all of Averill Park; his stepfather, Leonard VanVorst Jr. of Averill Park; his stepmother, Allison Maloney of Brainard; his maternal grandmother, Carol Denue of Rensselaer; his paternal grandmother, Gertude Hall of Hoags Corners; his great grandparents, Gertrude Chatfield of Hoags Corners and David and Hilda Brust of Cabool, MO; his stepsister, Alica 'Dolly' Maloney; his stepbrother, Thomas J. Maloney, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Raymond was the grandson of the late Donald J. Hall and William E. Jones.

    Funeral Tuesday 9:15 a.m. at the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel, 2691 NY 43 at Glass Lake, Averill Park and 10:00 a.m. at St. Henry's Church, Averill Park where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral chapel on Monday 4-8 p.m. Spring Interment in Hillside Cemetery, West Stephentown, NY. Donations in memory of Raymond J. Hall Jr. may be made to the Hoags Corner Ambulance, P.O. Box 218, East Nassau, NY 12062 if desired.

 

Kalinsky, Dorothy G.  --  [Published April 16, 1998 in the Times Union, Albany, NY]

HANCOCK, MA  --  Dorothy G. Kalinsky, 73, of Main Street, died at her residence on Tuesday. Born June 2, 1924 in Hancock, MA, she was the only child of the late John and Grace May Crandall Kalinsky and a life long resident of Hancock.

    Miss Kalinsky attended New Lebanon High School and worked at the L.H. & S. Mill in Hancock before going to work for the Eaton Paper Company in Pittsfield in 1947. She retired in 1978. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Stephentown.

    Survivors include two cousins, Norman Bailey of FL, Bruce Bailey of Chesire, MA and her dear friend, Evelyn R. McSorley of Hancock.

    Funeral services will be on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. from the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown and at 10 o'clock at St. Joseph's Church (across from the funeral home) where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Joseph Halloran. Burial will follow in the Hancock Cemetery. WEST LEBANON/ STEVENTOWN [sic]  -- Shane R. Kroboth, 11, of Stoney Brook Lane, West Lebanon and Grange Hall Rd., Stephentown died Tuesday at the Berkshire Medical Center as a result of an accident. Born in Pittsfield on November 24, 1990 he was the son of Alfred Kroboth Jr. and Shirley Coons Kroboth.

    He was a graduate of the Walter B. Howard Elementary School and a member of the chorus and band at school and also was a member of the D.A.R.E. program. He enjoyed swimming, motorcycles, fishing, working outdoors and doing mechanical work. Shane was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in New Lebanon.

    Survivors besides his father of West Lebanon and his mother of Stephentown, include a sister, Ashley M. Kroboth; his paternal grandparents, Janet Kroboth and Alfred A. Kroboth Sr. both of West Lebanon; his maternal grandparents, Russell and Dolores Coons of Lenox, MA; his stepfather, Michael Piche of Stephentown; stepmother, Vicki Cary Kroboth of West Lebanon; stepbrother, Michael Piche of Burlington, VT; two stepsisters, Harriet Piche of Burlington, VT and Kelly Piche of Shelburne, VT; a step-grandfather, Charles Cary of Rotterdam, NY and step-grandmother, Harriet Piche of Shelburne, VT. Shane also leaves many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Shane was predeceased by a step-grandmother, Helen Cary.

    Funeral services will be Friday, August 9 at 10 a.m. from the Dwyer Funeral Home, Pittsfield, MA with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church in New Lebanon, NY celebrated by Rev. Lee Smith chaplain at Berkshire Medical Center. Burial will follow in the Cemetery of the Evergreens. Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Thursday, August 8 from 4 to 7. If friends desire donations may be made to the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Dept. or to the American Heart Association care of the Dwyer Funeral Home in his memory.

    PITTSFIELD -- Verna Marie Ziemlak, 74, of 15 Edward Ave. died Monday afternoon at Laurel Lake Center For Health and Rehabilitation in Lee.
    Born in Stephentown, N.Y., on March 17, 1925, daughter of Vernon and Anna Gauer Lapp, she graduated from New Lebanon High School.
    A homemaker, she was employed at General Electric during the war years. She also worked at the former Frank's Lunch on Woodlawn Avenue for several years.
    She leaves her husband, Theodore Ziemlak, whom she married Dec. 9, 1948; a daughter, Mrs. Irene L. McMahon of Pittsfield; three sons, Francis J. Butler of Dalton, Vernon J. Butler of Germany, and Joseph M. Ziemlak of Cheshire; a sister, Mrs. Marion Mullett of Pittsfield; two brothers, Donald Lapp of Petersburg and Harold Lapp of Ojai, Calif., and eight grandchildren.
    FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Verna M. Ziemlak, 74, of Pittsfield, who died Sept. 13, will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams, with the Rev.   STEPHENTOWN, NY  --  Russell Moon, 78, of 68 School St. Westerly, R.I. died Thursday May 22, 1997 at Westerly Nursing Home.
Born in Stephentown on Dec. 9, 1918, the son of Charles and Clara Houghtling Moon, he was a graduate of New Lebanon High Schoool and a World War II Army veteran.
    Mr. Moon was employed by United Airlines as a mechanic.
    He leaves his wife, the former Marion Currier; three sons, Stephen Moon of Westerly; Phillip Moon of Stockton, Calif.; and David Moon of Northfield, N.H.; a daughter, Ruth Johnson of Hopkinton, R.I.; a brother, Lewis (Moon) Cooley of Queensbury, R.I.; a sister, Agnes (Moon) Cleveland McClamma of Largo, Fla., and 16 grandchildren.

Canaan Man Is Killed In Caracas

    CANAAN, N.Y.  --  Kenneth Sharpe 31, of this town was instantly killed in an accident while laying pipe lines in Caracas, Venezuela, yesterday, according to a message received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earle G. Sharpe Sr., last night.  Details of the accident are not known.  Kenneth left here about a week ago to work for Central Lines, a firm engaged in laying piples for oil companies.

    He worked in Venezuela for a short time last year, and when he left a week ago he signed up to work for the firm for three yars [sic].

    A native of Canaan, and a graduate of New Lebanon Central School, he served in the Navy during World War II.

    Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Earle G. Jr., of this town; two sister, Mrs. John Reddington of Cleveland and Mrs. Weldon Tuttle of Canaan and four nieces and nephews.

    The body will be brought to Canaan.

    STEPHENTOWN, N.Y. -- Donald E. Sweener Sr., 66, of Garfield Road yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass., after being stricken at home.
    Born in Stephentown on Aug. 26, 1935, son of Ulysses and Elizabeth Travis Sweener, he attended New Lebanon Central High School.
    Mr. Sweener had been a carpenter since the age of 16, working out of Carpenters' Union Local 78 of Troy. He also worked for the Rensselaer County Highway Department and retired from Troy Cabinets in 1997.
    He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a former member of the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department.
    He leaves his wife, the former Linda K. Hoffman, whom he married July 23, 1966, in St. Joseph's Church; three sons, Donald E. Sweener Jr. of Pittsfield, Craig Sweener of Lenox, Mass., and Kevin Sweener of Stephentown; three sisters, Ruth Reiger, Phyllis "Curly" Hoffman and Stella Hoffman, all of Stephentown; two brothers, Ulysses "Junior" Sweener and Lawrence Sweener, both of Stephentown, and seven grandchildren.

William Maynard, 54; worked at logging firm
    NEW LEBANON, N.Y. -- William C. Maynard, 54, of Ski Lodge Trailer Park died Thursday at home after a long illness.  Born in Pittsfield, Mass., on July 25, 1947, son of William S. Maynard and Doris Moore, he attended New Lebanon Central High School.
    Mr. Maynard enlisted in the Army and served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1967.  He worked with his brother, Bruce G. Maynard, in his brother's logging business, Liberty Fuelwood in Stephentown, until his illness last year.  He enjoyed fishing.
    Besides his father of Hancock, Mass., his mother of New Lebanon, and his brother of Stephentown, he leaves two daughters, Billie Joe Henault and Jessie Maynard, both of Pittsfield; his longtime companion, Diane Scutt of New Lebanon; another brother, Frederick M. Maynard of Stephentown, and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for William C. Maynard will be held in the Friendship Hall of Church of Our Saviour, Route 22, New Lebanon, on Thursday at 7. Cremation will take place at Gardner Earl Memorial Crematorium in Troy. There will be no calling hours. Mr. Maynard also leaves a nephew, Fred Maynard of Stephentown. Provost, Cecil Russell  --  [Published June 24, 1994 in the Times Union, Albany, NY]

STEPHENTOWN  --  Cecil Russell Provost, 75, of Provost Road died Wednesday in his home after a brief illness.
    Mr. Provost was born on the Carpenter family farm. He attended New Lebanon High School. He worked on the farm until 1940, when he purchased the former Wheeler Farm on what is now Provost Road. He established Provost Farm Supply in 1946 and operated it for many years. In 1969, he began work as a mechanic for General Electric, Pittsfield, Mass., retiring in 1987.
    Mr. Provost was a communicant of the Stephentown Federated Church for many years, and later St. Joseph's Church. He was a former member of the Stephentown Grange, the Pastime Riding Club and the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Dept.
    He was the widower of Mary Wood Provost.  Survivors include a son, Cecil R. Provost Jr. of Saratoga Springs; and a daughter, Colleen Nixon of Palm Bay, Fla.
    A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Church, Main Street, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.  Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel, Routes 43 and 66 at Glass Lake, Averill Park.  Contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Church, Stephentown, NY 12168.

 

 

Sanford, Charles A.  --  [Published December 16, 1995 in the Times Union, Albany, NY]

NEW LEBANON  --  Charles A. Sanford, 76, of Route 20 died Thursday at Albany Medical Center Hospital.  He was a lifelong New Lebanon resident, and attended schools there.  Mr. Sanford was an Army veteran of World War II.
    He worked at North Family Shakers, where he took care of the farm and gave tours. Mr. Sanford also was employed as a tire and service manager at the former John Thomas Ford dealership in Lebanon Springs, and at the General Electric Co. for seven years in Pittsfield, Mass. He later operated his own florist shop in New Lebanon Center for seven years, and last was employed at Berkshire Farms in Canaan as a horticulturalist for more than 15 years. He retired 16 years ago.
    Mr. Sanford was a member of the New Lebanon Congregational Church, the New Lebanon Senior Citizens and the Woodlawn Trail Riders Association in Chatham.
    He enjoyed square dancing, driving horse-drawn sleighs and horseback riding.
    Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Crego Sanford; two daughters, Barbara Robertson of New Lebanon and Patricia Kipp of Niverville; a sister, Dorothy Benjamin of New Lebanon; and three grandchildren.
    A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 318 Main St. (Route 43), Stephentown.
    Burial will be in the spring in the Cemetery of the Evergreens.
    Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

OLD CHATHAM, N.Y. -- Kelton M. Wadsworth, 81, of Percy Hill Road died yesterday at home.

    Born in New Lebanon on July 10, 1917, son of Dow V. and Anna Haynor Wadsworth, he was a graduate of New Lebanon High School.

    Mr. Wadsworth was employed by GE in Pittsfield as an inspector. He retired in 1977. He was a communicant of St. James' Church, the GE Quarter Century Club and the AFL-CIO. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.

    He leaves his wife, the former Jean Sincavich; three daughters, Ms. Ellalouise Wadsworth, Mrs. Bonita Loyche and Ms. Janie Wadsworth, all of Old Chatham; a brother, Vincent Wadsworth of New Lebanon; four grandchildren, and a great-grandson. Another daughter, Karen J. Distin, predeceased him.

    Born in Pittsfield on July 20, 1924, she graduated from New Lebanon High School. She had wintered in Florida for the past six years.
    Mrs. Shamblen was employed by the New Lebanon Supermarket for many years.
    She leaves her husband, Ralph H. Shamblen; two sons, Raymond Maynard of Alfred and Ralph Shamblen Jr. of Berlin; six daughters, Judith Blanche of Jacksonville, Fla., Karen Hresko of Saddle Brook, N.J., Cheryl Lyons of Charleston, S.C., Deborah Banker of New Lebanon, Brenda Schermerhorn of Ghent and Melissa Maston of Three Rivers; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

York, Stephen Arthur  --  [Published April 15, 1971 in The Berkshire Eagle, Pittsfield, Massachusetts]

Teen-Ager Killed When Tractor Hit by Truck

     EAST NASSAU, N.Y.  --  A 13-year-old student at New Lebanon Central School was killed yesterday afternoon, when the tractor he was driving on Route 66 was struck by a trailer truck. According to East Greenbush state police, Stephen York of Garfield Road was driving north on Route 66 and was making a left turn into Tsatsawassa Road when the rig, being driven south by Clifford Legere, 28, of Schenectady, collided with the tractor.

    York was pronounced dead at the scene. Two companions, Hal Metzler, 16, of Tsatsawassa Road and Edward Andreas, 17, of Thais Road, who were riding on the hood of the tractor, received minor injuries. They were treated at the Albany Medical Center and released.

    Police reported that the three youths were hurled about 60 feet by the force of the impact.

    No charges have been brought as a result of the accident, which is still under investigation.

    York, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. York, had attended the East Nassau and New Lebanon Central schools. He is survived by five brothers and sisters.

    Funeral services will be held at 2 Saturday at the LeClair Chapel. Burial will be in the East Nassau Cemetery.
