ALTHEA E. BENSON, RETIRED COOK, DIES AT 91
    Althea E. Benson, 91, formerly of Salisbury Street, a retired cook in the Delmar School District and widow of Albert L. Benson, died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday at the Pontiac Nursing Home, Oswego, where she had been a resident since 1985.
    A private funeral will be at the convenience of the family, with burial in Lancaster Rural Cemetery.  There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Sean Thompson Memorial Playground Fund, in care of Sandy Creek Central School.  Arrangements are with the Summerville Funeral Home.

    Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Norman (Elaine) Widrig, Lacona; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.  A daughter, Carolyn Jean Benson, died before her.
    Born in Lancaster on April 20, 1897, a daughter of Edwin and Clara Brunck Ives, she was a graduate of Lancaster High School.  She married Albert L. Benson on Sept. 12, 1923, in Lancaster.  The couple lived in Lancaster and Delmar after their marriage. Mrs. Benson was employed as a cook in the Delmar School District. Mr. Benson worked as a mechanic for the New York Central Railroad. The couple moved to Sandy Creek upon their retirement in 1961.
    Mr. Benson died March 14, 1981, at the age of 85.

    George E. Bernard, 59, of Delmar died Sunday in Albany Medical Center Hospital after a short illness.
    Mr. Bernard was born in Albany. He graduated from St. Teresa of Avila School and Christian Brothers Academy.
    Before his retirement in 1976, he owned and operated the Bernard and Blanchard Wholesale Grocers and a salt-distributing business in Albany.  From 1987 until his death, Mr. Bernard was a custodian for the Bethlehem Central School District business office.  He was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Delmar.
    Survivors include his wife, Marcia Sehl Bernard; two daughters, Laura Morris of Jackson Heights, Queens, and Patricia Troy of Albany; a brother, Conrad P. Bernard of Latham; and three grandchildren.
    Services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., Albany, and at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church.  Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Waterford.  Calling hours will be 4-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.  Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Albany County Unit, 1450 Western Ave., Albany, NY 12203.

RINGGOLD - Marjorie Claire Dahl, 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at her residence with her family present.
    She was a retired senior accounting clerk for 25 years with Bethlehem Central School District, Delmar, N.Y. Mrs. Dahl was a member of Boynton United Methodist Church.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, George Dahl; and brother, Raymond Knowles.  Survivors are daughter, Barbara Pulver, Ringgold; brother, Alfred Knowles, Hannacroix, N.Y.; sisters, Doris Bode, West Palm Beach, Fla., Virginia Buel, Cairo, N.Y.; grandchildren, Erin Pulver (Andrew) Pringle, Marietta, Ga., Tracy Pulver (Brandon) Cruse, Rossville, and Carly Pulver, Woodstock, Ga.; her precious angels, great-grandchildren, Beckham Cales Cruse and Cannon Kurt Cruse; several nieces and nephews.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Dorothy Pitt Daniels, 86, of Coronado Cove, a retired professional services unit secretary for the Bethlehem Central School System, Delmar, N.Y., died Saturday at home.
    Mrs. Daniels was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to this area in 1971 from Delmar. She was a member of Grace Community Church, the Artist's Workshop, and was a volunteer aide for eight years for the Oceanview Nursing Home.
    Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Whitman; a son, Jefferson, Clifton Park, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange 32119. Baldwin-Hughey is in charge.

Julia Valentine Esmond, 76, a former teacher for Bethlehem Central Schools, died Wednesday, Oct. 1.
    Born in Meredith, she was a resident of Delmar for many years. She was a resident of Whitney Lake, Pa., for the past 14 years.
    She was a teacher at the Hamagrael and Glenmont elementary schools, retiring in 1970.  She graduated from the State University at Oneonta with a major in education.  She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Selkirk. She was also a member of the Lakeville United Methodist Church in Lakeville, Pa., and she was a Sunday school teacher and choir member at the church. She was also president of the Lakeville United Methodist Women.

    She was an officer of the Scranton, Pa., District United Methodist Women. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheelk, the Ellen Memorial Health
Center and Wayne County Memorial Hospital.
    She leaves her husband, Irwin Esmond; two sons, David Esmond of Delmar and James Esmond of Cambridge, Mass.; two sisters, Edith Briggs of Naples and Marjorie Graves of Canandaigua; a brother, Charles Valentine of Largo, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
    Arrangements were by the Teeters Funeral Chapel in Hawley, Pa. Contributions may be made to the Lakeville United Methodist Church.

    Anne Evans Harvith, 80, a retired teacher for the Bethlehem Central School District and mother of school board member Bernard Harvith, died Sept. 9 at her Delmar home.

    Born in Ellenville, N.Y., she was a resident of Delmar for the past 47 years. After graduating from the State Teachers College, Albany, in 1924, she taught for various school districts. She also tutored home-bound and hospital-bound students of the Bethlehem Central School District.

    She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Delmar.

    She was the wife of the late Bernard Erving Harvith.

    Survivors include a son, Bernard Evans Harvith of Delmar, a member and former president of the Bethlehem Central Board of Education; two grandchildren, Anne E. Harvith and Marnie E. Harvith of Delmar; and several nieces and nephews.

Bethlehem School Bus Driver Dies At 31

    Mrs. Daniel C. Lottinville, 31, of 5 McMillen Pl., Delmar, a bus driver for the Bethlehem Central schools, died Sunday at Albany Medical Center hospital after an illness of several weeks.

    Born in Albany, she was the former Dorothy McMillen Houck and had lived in Delmar for most of her life.  She was a member of the Bethlehem Central Bus Drivers association and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Delmar Volunteer Fire department.

    Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Terrie Louise Houck; a son, Timothy Roger Houck; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David McMillen; and her grandfather William McMillen, all of Delmar.

    Funeral services were conducted at 9:30 a. m. Wednesday at the Applebee Funeral Home, Delmar, and at 10 a. m. at the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle.  Burial was in Bethlehem cemetery in Delmar.

GLENMONT  --  Florence Somerville Newell, 80, died Sunday at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Delmar.

    Mrs. Newell was born in Amsterdam and lived in Glenmont most of her life. She was a graduate of the Albany State Teachers College. 

    She taught business education in Homer, Cortland County, and Coxsackie high schools. Mrs. Newell was a substitute business teacher for the Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, and was also a tutor of disabled students. She operated the Sandy Creek Farm for 30 years with her late husband, Ernest A. Newell.

Mrs. Newell was a member of the Delmar Reformed Church for 56 years, and taught Sunday School there. She was also a board member of the Bethlehem Public Library in Delmar.

    Survivors include two sons, Thomas E. Newell of Selkirk and James W. Newell of Philadelphia; one sister, Edith Foster of Colonie; one brother, John Somerville of Oswego; and two granddaughters.

    A service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Delmar Reformed Church, 386 Delaware Ave., Delmar.

Contributions may be made to the Delmar Reformed Church Endowment Fund, or the Bethlehem Public Library.

SLINGERLANDS -- Donna L. Tice, 56, died Sunday evening at St. Peter's Hospital. 

    Mrs. Tice was born in Albany and was the daughter of the late Stanton and Alice Bulson. She was a graduate of Bethlehem Central High School, SUNY Albany and St. Rose College. Mrs. Tice was a teacher at the W.K. Doyle Middle School in Troy for 20 years, retiring in September 2002. Previously, she taught at the St. Thomas Grade School in Delmar and was a substitute teacher at the Bethlehem Central High School. Mrs. Tice was a communicant of the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle in Delmar. 

    Mrs. Tice is survived by her son, Jason M. Tice of Slingerlands and many cousins and friends. 

    Relatives and friends may call at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, 35 Adams Place, Delmar. Interment will be in Eagle Mills Cemetery, Brunswick, N.Y. Contributions in Mrs. Tice's memory may be sent to the W.K. Doyle Middle School, 1976 Burdett Ave., Troy, NY 12180 or the Delmar Rescue Squad, 145 Adams St., Delmar, NY 12054.

SLINGERLANDS  --  Ruth S. Voorhees, of Slingerlands, passed away July 7, 2005 at Camp Journey's End, her family's camp at Arnold Lake in Milford, N.Y. 

    Ruth was born in Albany on June 11, 1930, the daughter of the late Earl W. and Marian (Hoffman) Smith and attended Albany High School. 

    She worked as a secretary for the New York State Law Department, the Slingerlands United Methodist Church, the Bethlehem Youth Employment Service and retired as the secretary to the assistant superintendent of instruction for the Bethlehem Central School District. After retirement, she continued her education at HVCC and Russell Sage College. Her memberships included the Bethlehem Garden Club, the Delmar Progress Club, the Bethlehem Beautification Committee, the D.A.R., the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Slingerlands United Methodist Church. Ruth enjoyed gardening and her home, loved working with flowers and doing crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. She loved to write and had won several awards for her works. 

    She is survived by her husband, Henry V. Voorhees; a son, Jeffrey E. (Gail) Voorhees of Glenmont; a daughter, Alison V. (Nicholas) Kurtessis of Delmar; a sister, Marian S. (Albert) Davis of Slingerlands; four grandchildren, James Kurtessis of N.C., Katherine R. Kurtessis of Delmar and Robert H. and Katherine A. Voorhees, both of Glenmont; a special cousin, Nancy Hoffman of Delmar; many nieces, nephews, cousins and her beloved dog, Rosie. 

    Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Delmar Reformed Church, 386 Delaware Ave., Delmar. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery. Those who wish may send a remembrance in her name to the Bethlehem Garden Club, P.O. Box 485, Delmar, NY 12054.
